All my 3 year old had to do was tell me she was sorry.\u00a0 That’s it.\u00a0 I’m sorry.\u00a0 Two little words.\u00a0 So why did it take half an hour?<\/p>\n
Laura was sitting on her bed crying because she didn’t want to be in trouble.\u00a0 We explained that if she said she was sorry, she wouldn’t be in trouble anymore.\u00a0 Apparently that wasn’t convincing.<\/p>\n
Laura is learning to control her anger.\u00a0 As in – it is okay to be angry, upset, frustrated, what have you.\u00a0 It is NOT okay to hit, bite, kick, lock yourself in your room, scream or throw things.\u00a0 It is also a requirement to apologize when necessary.\u00a0 Pretty simple from an adult perspective.\u00a0 Not so simple when you’re three.\u00a0 I know this.\u00a0 I don’t understand her confusion but I know that it is there.\u00a0 The moment when Laura “gets” this concept is on the horizon.\u00a0 Robert and I have survived this phase twice before.\u00a0 We just have to be consistent and patient.\u00a0 Waiting 30 minutes for a pitiful “I’m sorry” is just part of the deal.<\/p>\n
So why is it so hard to say that you’re sorry?\u00a0 Is it fear of the other person’s reaction?\u00a0 Is it because it is an admission of wrongdoing?\u00a0 I think the latter is probably more realistic.\u00a0 Nowadays, most people spend their youth learning in school.\u00a0 Then they spend the rest of their career proving what all they know.\u00a0 It would make sense that as we get older and more experienced it would be more difficult to admit a wrong.\u00a0 That obviously doesn’t apply to Laura.\u00a0 She hasn’t even been to kindergarten yet!<\/p>\n
A few hours ago, after an excruciating wait, Laura finally uttered those two magic words and was allowed out of time out.\u00a0 It is over and forgotten.\u00a0 She is now asleep and if you peek at her precious face you would swear she’s an angel.\u00a0 She is.\u00a0 Maybe I’m biased.\u00a0 Sorry!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
