{"id":253,"date":"2010-01-07T20:31:42","date_gmt":"2010-01-08T01:31:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.annakatedonovan.com\/?p=253"},"modified":"2010-01-07T20:31:42","modified_gmt":"2010-01-08T01:31:42","slug":"i-have-survived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annakatedonovan.com\/?p=253","title":{"rendered":"I have survived&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;another trip to the pediatrician.\u00a0 With all three girls.\u00a0 By myself&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know why these trips are so incredibly stressful for me.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a lie.\u00a0 I do know.\u00a0 I am there to get information about my child&#8217;s health.\u00a0 I am trying to give all the pertinent facts and answer all of the questions so that I can then listen to the doctor&#8217;s diagnosis and advice.\u00a0 Is that asking too much?\u00a0 Apparently my children think this a time to entertain the doctor.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re on the same page&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Once Dr. M has entered the room and greeted the girls she turns to me and asks &#8220;What brings you in today?&#8221;.\u00a0 My children see that as a golden opportunity to tell the story of their day\/week\/month\/year.\u00a0 Our current doctor is great (all of our pediatricians have been great, FYI).\u00a0 She patiently listens to each of my daughters ramble on for a few minutes before subtly helping them wrap up their story.\u00a0 The girls have gotten all of their important words out into the open so Dr. M. and I can finally start talking about why we are there.\u00a0 Now the girls start to touch stuff.\u00a0 Anything silver and shiny and off-limits.\u00a0 Let me interject here and say that, in the grand scheme of things, my daughters are not being that bad.\u00a0 They are not screaming, hitting, kicking, biting or disturbing other patients.\u00a0 They are just disturbing <em>my<\/em> patience.\u00a0 I know exactly what is going on.\u00a0 They are at <em>their<\/em> doctor where we are talking about <em>their<\/em> issues and they want <em>their<\/em> attention.\u00a0 I know that.\u00a0 I understand that.\u00a0 I have no problem with that.\u00a0 It is very simple.\u00a0 However, when I am sitting in that room trying to determine if my child needs to be referred to an ENT about her ear issues, I tend to forget that principle.<\/p>\n<p>I have yet to completely &#8220;lose it&#8221; at the doctor&#8217;s office.\u00a0 Somehow in the presence of a health professional, I can muster the fortitude to hold in my frustration.\u00a0 I wish I could do that all the time.\u00a0 As I said before, I am not talking about serious misbehavior &#8211; they are just being the curious, talkative little girls that they are.\u00a0 So why do I have such a problem?\u00a0 I think it has to do with my belief that the doctor&#8217;s time is precious.\u00a0 I know how fortunate I am to have good health insurance and the ability to get the health care my family needs.\u00a0 I am very aware of how many others are in the waiting room also needing to be seen.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to be the person who takes up valuable time with meaningless chit-chat.\u00a0 But I digress&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The most tedious trips are the last minute ones when someone is in need of an ear check or strep test or what have you.\u00a0 That happened today.\u00a0 But I survived.\u00a0 I even managed to pick up medicine on the way home.\u00a0 Did I mention that Laura didn&#8217;t have a nap?\u00a0 Did I forget to tell you that Robert is out of town?\u00a0 HA HA HA HA.\u00a0 BRING IT ON!<\/p>\n<p>The girls are in bed, there&#8217;s chocolate in the kitchen and my alma mater is about to kick off in the BCS National Championship.\u00a0 Life is good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post-excerpt\">&#8230;another trip to the pediatrician.\u00a0 With all three girls.\u00a0 By myself&#8230;..
