{"id":234,"date":"2009-12-24T17:22:04","date_gmt":"2009-12-24T22:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.annakatedonovan.com\/?p=234"},"modified":"2009-12-24T17:22:04","modified_gmt":"2009-12-24T22:22:04","slug":"now-ive-done-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/annakatedonovan.com\/?p=234","title":{"rendered":"now I&#8217;ve done it&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After almost 12.5 years, I have finally done it.\u00a0 I broke one of my china plates.\u00a0 Ugh.<\/p>\n<p>When this happened, I was washing plates after a successful neighborhood Christmas party.\u00a0 One plate slipped out of my hand and crashed into the sink, breaking the plate it smashed into.\u00a0 It was merely a bread and butter plate but it still made me sick to my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>I stood there feeling sorry for myself and then it dawned on me.\u00a0 I was really upset about the demise of this plate.\u00a0 Why on earth would it be a loss of any sort?\u00a0 After all it is ONLY a plate.\u00a0 A mere object.\u00a0 In the days since the &#8220;incident&#8221;, I have wondered and thought about the importance of said plate.<\/p>\n<p>Part of it is a sense of pride.\u00a0 We have schlepped our china, crystal and silver to three states in the southeast without incident.\u00a0 We have packed and unpacked and packed and unpacked again.\u00a0 We have not used them as much as we should have but we have used them some.\u00a0 Regardless, I was always satisfied after each meal and move that nothing from this precious collection had been damaged.<\/p>\n<p>After more consideration, I realized why these silly things are of such an importance to me.\u00a0 They symbolize the beginning of my marriage.\u00a0 Really?<\/p>\n<p>When Robert and I were engaged, we went to Bromberg&#8217;s to register for china, silver and crystal.\u00a0 For those of you who are not familiar with Birmingham, AL, Bromberg&#8217;s is a family owned jewelry and china store that has been around for decades.\u00a0 Many people register there when they get engaged.\u00a0 For some, it is a rite of passage.\u00a0 Receiving one of their signature silver boxes with the beautiful ribbon is almost as good as a box in Tiffany blue.\u00a0 Anyway, Robert and I stood in Bromberg&#8217;s facing a wall of china that bordered on intimidating.\u00a0 After a few minutes of silence, Robert said &#8220;there&#8217;s only one up there that I like.&#8221;\u00a0 I agreed completely and I would have said the same thing if he hadn&#8217;t spoken first.\u00a0 We had the same experience with the silver and crystal.\u00a0 It felt like a sign.\u00a0 The patterns we chose were not the favorites of most couples at the time.\u00a0 They were not the &#8220;in&#8221; patterns to choose.\u00a0 They are simple, elegant and beautiful.\u00a0 They were perfect for us then and still are.<\/p>\n<p>Once we had signed up for what we had chosen, I started to look around the store at the other brides who were there to register.\u00a0 Most of them were with their mother.\u00a0 Only one other groom was there and he looked like he&#8217;d rather be having oral surgery.\u00a0 His fiance had also brought her mother and the two women were picking out everything while the poor groom was counting tiles in the ceiling.\u00a0 Was I the only one who wanted to experience this with my fiance?\u00a0 Was he the only one who felt the same? \u00a0Did no other couples enjoy doing these things together? \u00a0I was astounded and awash with gratitude.\u00a0 Robert seemed to pick up on all of this.\u00a0 He gets me.<\/p>\n<p>So, call me what you want.\u00a0 A sap, overly sentimental, whatever.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter to me.\u00a0 The broken plate is not a sign of anything anymore.\u00a0 We have weathered many storms in our time together and I&#8217;m sure there are many more to come.\u00a0 We have always emerged stronger and surer of our love for each other.\u00a0 One little bread and butter plate is not even a blip on the screen, nor should it be.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll be more careful washing in the future!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/annakatedonovan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IGP0131.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-236\" title=\"not what it once was...\" src=\"http:\/\/annakatedonovan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IGP0131-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/annakatedonovan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IGP0131-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/annakatedonovan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IGP0131.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post-excerpt\">After almost 12.5 years, I have finally done it.\u00a0 I broke one of my china plates.\u00a0 Ugh.
